I spy ..Now playing at MSG

James-Dolan-slyly-plants-a-bug-in-Carmelo-Anthonys-warmups_-AP-Kathy-Willens Log this one under are you kidding me? There is a story floating around that James Dolan is tapping every word Carmelo Anthony utters on the basket ball court. This apparently began after the Kevin Garnett trash talking incident in which the Celtics beat the Knicks 102-96. The trash talking has knocked Melo off his game. And of cousre it doesn’t take long for everyone to take notice that Melo is rattled easy and then next thing you know everyone starts doing it with a measure of success. Note to Melo toughen up you’re from Red Hook in Brooklyn, you couldn’t be thin skined there so don’t be thin skined now. I know about trash talking I grew up in Fort Greene and could they talk trash with the best of them and if you where thin skined it…got worse and everyone came after you all the way home so…either tune it out or… fuel it to your advantage and take it to the trash talkers and lead your team to victory. Having said that let’s get back to the real story of why Dolan is now recording his star player. According to Dave D’Alessandro of the Newark Star-Ledger:

Two audio technicians were stationed at two corners of the court — one a few feet just behind the Knicks bench, the other diagonally opposite — and they were holding those umbrella-shaped contraptions known as parabola microphones, which fed the audio into a DAT recorder on the truck on the loading dock.

These guys had one directive from Dolan: Record every syllable Carmelo Anthony utters and absorbs while he’s on the court and on the bench, the Madison Square Garden CEO ordered them, and send the tape directly to me.

After this part of the story no one not even the reporter seems to know why or what the purpose is recording Melo. Dolan has a reputation of being very paranoid nothing is said in front of the camera without his say so or without his knowledge. So in this sense this is Dolan being Dolan. But if he is doing this without his star player’s knowledge then what will that do to their relationship going forward? What message does that send out to the rest of the team and the entire organization? On face value the story is creepy but after thinking about it it goes deeper. James Dolan must have too much time on his hands to have mics recording Melo’s every word. This is one example of possibly what Lebron James must have been thinking about before signing with Miami.

One writer Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News  had a theory about what drove Dolan to do this:

One possible starting point could have been raised by Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News last Thursday, who considered an element of Anthony’s one-game suspension that might’ve made Dolan even madder than the penalty itself:

Dolan, the Cablevision boss, must be seething that his two cable rivals, companies he has done business battle with, cold busted his main man Anthony by providing all the video evidence the NBA needed to suspend him for Thursday night’s game with Indiana. […]

How did the NBA know Anthony “attempted to engage” Garnett after the game? The first piece of evidence was provided by the camera of Comcast SportsNet New England, covering the Celtics. The camera was near a ramp in the bowels of the Garden, where Boston’s bus was parked. The video showed Anthony lingering, waiting to confront Garnett.

On Wednesday, Time Warner-owned TMZ aired video, shot by an operative in the same area, of Anthony following after Garnett and the two exchanging words, which were barely audible. While the video was not exactly HD-quality, it painted an ugly picture of life outside the NBA bus, one that must have been cringe-inducing to David Stern.

Dolan, too. His skin was crawling for a different reason. These outlets came strolling into his house, the refurbished Garden, and had cameras in the right place at exactly the right time, providing enough video to thoroughly embarrass his organization and get Anthony suspended. It’s one thing to be busted, but when it’s done by the competition — ouch.

In any case it isn’t about the play on the court that will attract attention it is the SPY behind the camera now playing at MSG.

  1. It’s amazing what KG can do to another player’s psyche . Shouldn’t Dolan be more concerned with the family’s cable business at present ?

What do you think about the Maloofs agreeing in principle to sell the Kings’ franchise to a Seattle based consortium ? The Sacramento City Council were duped , just like Seattle were , when the Sonics were uprooted under a web of lies and deceit .

    1. Only believe the deal when the NBA announces it the Maloofs are known to pull out of deals at the last minute. When the Supersonics left for Oklahoma they were promised a team much like Cleveland was when the Browns left for Baltimore.

      1. They have agreed to it in principle , and it only awaits the seal of approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors and the team owners’ approval .

With regard to Seattle and the Sonics , the city of Seattle got a $25 million payoff for the troubles . And I expect the same thing to take place with Kings and the city of Sacramento !
