Oregon Ducks Quack: to one major violation

According to a published report on Yahoo sports, Oregon has committed one major violation and is disputing with the NCAA over another violation. According to the Oregonian’s report, Oregon agreed it improperly used three scouting services, Elite Scouting Services, New Level Athletics and Complete Scouting Services, by accepting oral reports when written quarterly reports are required by the NCAA. Complete Scouting Services is associated with Lyles, who is considered a Ducks booster by the NCAA. The NCAA considers the oral reports from Lyles to be an additional major violation, the Oregonian said.

“There is no information,” the NCAA stated, via the Oregonian, “in the record that Lyles coerced or directed any prospect to ultimately choose Oregon. That said, Lyles did provide a meaningful recruiting advantage by orally providing background information about prospects to the coaching staff and also by serving as a conduit to facilitate communication with prospective student-athletes.”

The Oregonian said that most of the violations listed in the summary disposition memos happened when Chip Kelly was head coach. Kelly, of course, left to the NFL this January. Is that a surprise to one and all? When a successful College coach leaves for the pros you have to wonder if the school knew it was going to be hit with a violation, or if the coach himself knew the program was going to get hit and decides to leave so that it doesn’t hurt his resume or reputation. In Kelly’s case these violation apparently happened on his watch so you have to reasonably assume he knew something about this.

Oregon wants to have the NCAA put them on a two year ban, that is like a kid gets in trouble at home and gets to decide his own punishment. I don’t think so. So expect the NCAA to come down with something alittle more tougher than what Oregon is willing to accept. As for Kelly, his focus is on the Philadelphia Eagles and the Ducks are in his rearview mirror. One could easily get the feeling he knew what was coming and decided on leaving before it got bad for him.
