Smallthoughts:Rants and Raves

Rants: NFL rules committee: I understand you are concerned about player safety and have reason to be. But the rules regarding kickoffs are getting ridiculous. Part of the charm of the NFL is that the kick return on the Kickoff creates the potential for excitement. The Kickoffs is another offensive weapon for field poesession and an occasional run back for a score. This past weekend alone 76 percent of the kick off resulted in zero run backs …what gives?

Rants:Ndamukong Suh: For illegal block on the knees against Vikings center John Sullivan. This is the latest of a long line of dirty plays from this player. The NFL fined him 100,000. Maybe after getting hit in the pocket enough times will teach Suh there is the right way and the wrong way to play football.

Rants: Von Miller– it’s bad enough that he was suspended for 6 games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, but now add the driving charge, this will have the Commissioner look to extending Miller’s suspension longer, impacting the Broncos season. Definitely not thinking clearly about either himself or the team.

Raves:Kudos to Broncos coach John Fox for taking a stand against his player, Von Miller. Usually coaches and managers sidestep their feelings publicly. Fox stated:”Obviously, it’s something that we’re not happy about,” Fox said Wednesday. ”Everybody here has an individual responsibility not only to themselves but to this organization, as well as to this football team. So, obviously it’s something that we’re not pleased about. I’ll leave it at that.”

Raves:Geno Smith for having a solid first game to the start of his NFL career. No he isn’t ready for the Hall of Fame. But for the first game out of the box he at least kept his composure under pressure and showed himself to be better than some in New York thought.

Raves:Pittsburgh Pirates- for the first time since Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla and Andy Van Slyke lft the building in 1992 the Pirates will finish the season over 500. At 84 wins and counting they are one game behind the Cardinals for lead in the NL Central. And two games up on the Reds. A very hotly contested division. Good for baseball. By the way this could be the first time that another team that hasn’t seen 500 or better since 1985 could finish above 500… the Kansas City Royals.
