Mark Jackson came to California to make the Golden State Warriors winners. They are on their way but he won’t be along for the ride. Jackson was fired as coach of the Warriors. It wasn’t about wins or loses it was about getting along with his bosses. His brash style rubbed them the wrong way until they felt it was time for a change. Will Jackson get another shot at coaching a team, yes. Strangely enough there is a team in New York that hasn’t hired a coach yet. The Knicks and Steve Kerr have been linked as a possible match but the warriors have contacted Kerr as well. For the Knicks Kerr fits the style that Phil Jackson wants to impose on the Knicks but Kerr is said to want to stay on the west coast. Golden State fits his location, ironically the now unemployeed Mark Jackson is from… New York so from a public relations stand point picture Mark Jackson coaching t his hometown Knicks with his boss, former Knick Phil Jackson running the show at MSG. The question I have is a simple one, can Mark Jackson coach and run the triangle offense? Kerr has experience in the offense having played for Jackson in Chicago. Logic says go with the guy you know knows what you want and is comfortable with it as opposed to trying to teach and fit someone in who hasn’t had much experience in that offense. This isn’t as simple as sounds. The pressure could mount to hire Mark Jackson in New York again from a P.R. point of view it would create excitement and buzz, hometown Jackson comes home to coach his hometown team. Kerr has said he would be willing to hear what the Warriors have to say. This can’t make Phil Jackson too happy. If Kerr is hired by the Warriors and say Phil Jackson decides Mark Jackson isn’t his kind of coach where does that leave the Knicks? Mark Jackson will be hired by someone. In fact try this on for size now that he isn’t employed maybe the other team in LA…(the Lakers) would be interested in talking to him about their opening. The Lakers are said to be talking to Roy Williams but Jackson would make more sense one, he has already coached in the NBA and he is alot younger so they can build a team and have him grown with it. The next few days will be interesting to see how the coaching wheel spins around and who lands where. One thing is for sure the Warriors made a big mistake in letting Mark Jackson go. With no previous coaching experience he turned the warriors around and made them relevant, for the first time in decades. Someone else will benefit from his work and what he started there, but he showed he can coach and can relate to the players which as we all know is most important.
