Rants: Miami Marlins…there is a report out that the Marlins are talking to Giancarlo Stanton on a new contract, which isn’t news in itself. If I were the marlins I’d want to lock up a rare talent like Stanton as well. But the eye brow was raised when in the same report that the Marlins were talking 10 years 300 million!!! Seriously? The Marlins who trade away talent when a player approaches his walk year? Now they want o commit 10 years and 300 Million??? This is what drives fans crazy about Owners, they cry players make too much cry about how they don’t have moneythen sign players to these 250-300 Million dollar deals. And at last count many of those deals didn’t pan out so well. Think of Alex Rodriquez, Albert Pujois and Josh Hamilton as examples. Now if you want to say Stanton is young and hasn’t hit his prime years yet, fair point, but how long after the ink is dry will the Marlins look to get out from under such a big contract which won’t allow for financial flexibility to acquire needed talent as time goes on?
Rants: Oscar Taveras …it is sad that a young life ended so tragically recently in the Dominican Republic. Taveras was an upcoming talent and the St Louis Cardinals next budding star. Yet this is a sad case of this is what happens when you mixed poor judgment and alcohol together. It has been reported that Taveras was legally intoxicated 5 times the country’s legal limit when he lost control of his car October 26 on a highway in the tourist region of Puerto Plata.
Rants: Felix Hernandez finishes ahead of Cy Young winner in MVP voting… Let me see if I got this straight… Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians beat out Felix Hernandez for the American League Cy Young, which was a surprise to many …yet when it came for voting for AL MVP (Which went to Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout) Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians finished 11th, three points behind King Felix. Really? Seriously?
Raves: Clayton Kershaw wins both the NL Cy Young and NL MVP…He may have a meltdown in the playoffs against the Cardinals but that didn’t dissuade voters from Making him both the Cy Young and MVP winner in the National League. He is the first National League pitcher since Bob Gibson (Who won it in 1968) to win the MVP.
Raves:Jacob DeGrom…for winning the National League Rookie of the Year..DeGrom didn’t start the year in impressive fashion in fact he went 0-4 with a 4.39 ERA in his first seven starts. Then won at Miami with seven scoreless innings on June 21. After that start he went on to win nine of his last 11 decisions, compiling a 1.99 ERA, and finished 9-6 with a 2.69 ERA. He is the fifth Met to win the award and the first since Dwight Gooden did in 1984. Tom Seaver (1967), Jon Matlack (1972), Darryl Strawberry (1983) were the other Mets who have won that award.
Raves: Mike Trout wins AL MVP …To the surprise of no one Trout continues to impress and walks away with the hardware that shows he is the best player in the league.
