The Numbers are just staggering. As a friend of mine said to me about this…it’s mind boggling. It is by far the richest contract in sports history. I would question if anyone let alone Giancarlo Stanton is worth that kind of money but then you could say no one is worth the kind of money they are being paid in sports these days. My bigger question is where did the Marlins get this kind of money? Why would they pay one player that much money? The Marlins are not the New York Yankees that signed Alex Rodriquez to a 10 year- 275 million dollar contract back in 2007. The Marlins have been known to trade players away like Stanton or sign players like Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and heath Bell to big contracts and then trade them a year later. So where did the Marlins get that kind of money to sig Stanton to such a huge deal? The other issue which has been an issue forever with the Marlins is…people showing up to there games. If they didn’t show up or are not showing up how do you justify paying that kind of money? Stanton according to one report was two years away from free agency so it wasn’t like the Marlins had to pay him now. If the Marlins don’t draw well or can’t sign other players because they tied so much money into one player that puts both the team and Stanton on the road to nowhere. According to one report he has a opt-out clause after the 2020 season…or 6 years from now. Assuming the Marlins and current ownership is around at that time. As I said at the beginning …Mindboggling!
