Darryl Dawkins aka Chocolate Thunder R.I.P.

We featured Darryl Dawkins some time ago on our Smallthoughts: Old School Tuesday,

While in the eyes of many he never lived up to the potential that many thought he had, there was no denying that he was a force and he was a character who never took himself too seriously and always made room to have fun and bring fun to the fans who watched him play. I heard a sportscaster say that Dawkins was the first to make the jump from High School to the NBA…that dear fans is not true , (Bill Willoughby was the first to make the jump from High School to the Pros but that is another story for another time) but dawkins was among the first few to make that big jump…Moses Malone was another. He was known for his dunks as well as racking up fouls in a matter of minutes. Dawkins could get 3 fouls just getting to the scorers table when checking in the game and there was the occasional phantom fouls the refs would call on Dawkins. He is also known for his fight with Maurice Lucas in the 1977 NBA Finals Philadelphia 76ers vs the Portland TrailBlazers and two glass shattering dunks that awed fans and shocked the NBA.

Darryl Dawkins was Chocolate Thunder form the planet Love Tron and he was a character who will be missed. R.I,P. Big fella.

Welcome to Smallthoughtsinasportsworld. We keep it fun and we keep interesting and informative. On Tuesdays we go back in time with Old School Tuesdays, on Thursdays we keep it fun by Smallthoughts Trivia Thursday and on Fridays ...it is Smallthoughts: Rant of the Week and Smallthoughts:Rave of the Week and we also post the answer from Smallthoughts:Trivia Thursday. I am a lifelong New York Mets, Knicks and Jets and Giants fan. I root hard for my teams and have rooted for them even when it wasn't and in some cases still isn't easy. I enjoy talking sports, and on here I get to write about it as well. I have my thoughts hence Small thoughts, we will not always agree, but respectfully speak about what we feel. I invite your comments and feedback as well. You can also follow me on twitter @bklynboy59 and facebook Jerry bklynboy Small

    1. He didn’t take himself too seriously and maybe to some he didn’t live up to his potential but the NBA was different then now and he was different. Could you imagine how good he would have been if he played today?
