Smallthoughts: Rants and Raves

Start here

Gottlieb: Phillies fire Ruben Amaro Jr.

Rants:Ruben Amaro Jr. Amaro’s firing wasn’t much of a surprise especially when you consider his manager quit half way through the season, Ryan Howard isn’t the same player he once was and Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins are both in Dodger uniforms, the surprise is that it took this long to send Amaro packing. It has been said part of Amaro’s undoing in Philly was his resistance to  adopt his work towards using more sabermetrics and less doing the old school way. We will see how this works for the next GM in Philly.

Rants: Police Officers who arrested James Blake in a case of mistaken Identity… It was bad enough to be detained and questioned about his connection to fraudulently purchased cell phones but he was also handcuffed and tackled. He was released and the police are offering an apology and there is an internal investigation going on as to how they carried on this handling of James Blake.

Rants:Matt Harvey…Mr. Harvey created quite a stir with his comments on an 180 innings limit, which was made public through his agent Scott Boras. The curious part in all of this was the timing of this going public, what was there to be gained by doing this? He is 3 years away from free agency and he was at 166 innings as of Monday …so why bring up innings limits when you didn’t say anything about it all along? Then his performance against the Washington Nationals raised even more eyebrows in a big moment you expect him to step up …

Raves: Bartolo Colon…The man the myth the legend at 42 years old all he does is pitch well, and make behind the back flips to first base and keeps the Mets in games. He had 31 scoreless inning streak until Thursday night against the Braves (gave up 2 runs in a 7-2 win for the Mets) …he won  National League player of the week

Raves: New York Mets… The run away favorites to win the National League east at the beginning of the season were…The Washington Nationals…well look at the standings as of this morning …the New York Mets are 7 1/2 games up on the Washington Nationals and just completed a 3 game sweep of the Nats in DC in come from behind fashion …now it looks like they run and hide on the Nationals and win the division easily…Amazin’

Raves:Yoenis Cespedes… Thank You Dave Dombrowski for saving the Mets season with this trade. Wow! The team’s fortunes changed for the better the minute Cespedes showed up. The rest of the lineup became deeper and more clutch just by his presence. We all knew about his defense but his hitting and base running has been outstanding. His stats since joining the Mets on July 31st…14 HRs 46 RBI’s 332 batting Average…Amazin’
