Smallthoughts: Rants and Raves

Rants: Detroit Lions …are there a more dysfunctional team in the NFL than the Lions? Bad off season moves doomed this team from the start and now the people making the decisions were made to pay…

fired was team president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew on Thursday and promised to bring in new leadership to put a consistent winner on the field.”We are very disappointed with the results of the season so far and believe a change in leadership was necessary,” said owner Martha Firestone Ford, reading from a prepared statement.

The Lions are an NFC-worst 1-7 under second-year coach Jim Caldwell, whose staff was not affected by the changes a week after he replaced some assistants, including offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

Rants: Indianapolis Colts…not to be undone in the dysfuntional department are the Colts who are basically…Andrew Luck and not much else. They fired their offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton and replaced with associate head coach Rob Chudzinski.”As head coach of this team, it’s my responsibility to make sure I’m doing everything we can to put us in the best position to succeed,” Pagano said in a statement. ”We thank Pep for his service to the team and wish him all the best.”

They lost their first two games for the second time in Pagano’s tenure and are in the midst of the first three-game losing streak since Pagano and Andrew Luck arrived in town in 2012. Outside the terrible AFC South, Indianapolis is 0-5, and Luck has thrown a league-high 12 interceptions despite missing the first two games of his career because of a right shoulder injury.

Not surprisingly, Pagano and Hamilton had faced a steady stream of criticism for mistakes and questionable play-calling. Hamilton mostly blamed himself.

”It’s a combination of helping the protection and then I just have to do a better job of coming up with ways to get our guys matched up and getting them matched up against the linebackers, safeties, whoever, getting them more involved in the passing game,” Hamilton said Thursday when he was asked why the tight ends weren’t more involved.

Rants: San Francisco 49ers… They changed coaches and let Harbaugh go to Michigan, then they traded Vernon Davis their top tightend and now they have benched their quarterback Colin Kapernick who they just gave a big 6 year 126 million dollar contract to this past offseason, so where do they go from here? This was once a proud franchise that was the model of offensive excellence (Bill Walsh, Joe Montana) now it’s a fallen wreck…wow!

Raves: Terry Collins…despite losing the world series in 5 games to the Kansas City Royals, the New York Mets rewarded Collins with a new 2 year deal. Good job and Collins is in the running for manager of the year. He finally proved he can manage when giving talent to work with. Now it’s on Sandy Alderson to make the tough decisions of who stays and who goes and how he plans to replace those who leave, but at least the Mets did themselves and Collins a favor by not letting him twist in the wind any longer.

Raves:Golden State Warriors …off to a 8-0 start  the champs are showing that they are legit and looking to hold on to their title…granted it is a long season and the Cavs are 7-1 keeping pace with the Warriors for top record, but can’t argue about the start they are having.

Raves:New York Rangers …we usually don’t give kudos to the Hockey side of sports but…the New York Rangers are 11-2 and are on a 6 game winning streak, in their last 10 games the Blueshirts are 8-0-2…and are 7-1-1 at home and holding their own on the road so far at 4-1-1.
