Smallthoughts: Rant of the Week…Oklahoma City Thunder

Start here

My rant of the week came down to two choices Marlon Byrd of the Cleveland Indians who was suspended for 162 games for PED use (Performance Enhancing Drugs) or the Oklahoma City Thunder who are done in the playoffs after leading their playoff series against the Golden State Warriors 3 games to 1 then lose the next 3 games in a row. Well you can see by the title which way this is going.

No athlete ever wants to hear the “C” word …Choke …it is the equal to saying you quit. Ok the Oklahoma City Thunder didn’t quit like in the sense of just do nothing but they did choke and choke badly…when you are up 3 games to 1 with a shot of going to the NBA Finals (to Play for the Championship) then you have to put your opponent away in this case the reigning champions the Golden State Warriors. If they didn’t quit outright then what did the Thunder do to lose this series? What they did all season long …they did not finish off their opponent when the opportunity was there to do so. Game after game in this series when it mattered especially once they had the advantage they could not make the plays that showed championship mettle, that show they can and will put you away. Instead they make bad decisions with the ball, a bad pass here a bad pass there, followed by not hitting their shots and their franchise players (Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook ) collapsed under the pressure. Against a team like the Warriors who can score , score and score again … you have to put them away when you have the chance otherwise you lose. The Thunder lost …they choked away the chance of getting to the Finals. They now have to rethink how they let this opportunity get away from them.

  1. Everyone has been wading in with their thoughts on the conference finals’ loss by the Thunder. It was a collective effort which led to the defeat and the players are as much to blame as the coaching staff of the Oklahoma City Thunder. This hasn’t been brought up by anyone in great depth. There has been the usual pragmatic op-ed pieces and not much real insight by those who claim to know something about the game.

Here is something to think about…all season the Thunder have had problems closing out games…it’s what led to Scott Brooks getting fired last season…Billy Donavan has gone through the same thing, so apparently it’s not the coach…maybe it’s time the players be held accountable for bad passes in big moments. No excuse for being up 3 games to 1 and lose the series.
