I am a lifelong New York Mets, Knicks and Jets and Giants fan. I root hard for my teams and have rooted for them even when it wasn't and in some cases still isn't easy. I enjoy talking sports, and on here I get to write about it as well. I have my thoughts hence Small thoughts, we will not always agree, but respectfully speak about what we feel. I invite your comments and feedback as well. You can also follow me on twitter @bklynboy59 and facebook Jerry bklynboy Small

This may not be the time and place to raise this so forgive me. But the whole incident with Kobe got me thinking about how we all have multiple personas and which of these gets remembered. Currently, Kobe is being remembered in a hugely positive light and despite not featuring on my radar, from what I have read there is no doubt he was a great sportsman. It also seems like he was a great father.
But there are also voices out there that have drawn attention to the more shady side of Kobe, namely, the whole rape trial a few years ago which was settled out of court. From what I’ve read, although he was not convicted of the crime, it certainly seemed something untoward happens. And because of fame and fortune, his legal team were able to limit the damage to his reputation.
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t be celebrating this basketball legends life and achievements but I’m saying his legacy is complicated (as would be the case with each and every one of us) but because of who he is as a celeb, I think it is easy to do this whole hero-worship thing without enough perspective.
You raise an interesting point. There is a dark side that will not see the light of day right now because of the overwhelming amount of love being shown
