Who Knew? Dantoni New Laker coach

I will be the first to admit I didn’t see this coming, in fact when I wrong my entry about the Mike brown firing I did mention Dantoni but dismissed it because, to win championships you have to play defense, which Dantoni detest. So in  move that stunned everyone, the Lakers hired Mike Dantoni as the new headcoach. Dantoni signed a 3 year deal with the Lakers. What was stunning was that the Lakers turned to Phil Jackson to take over the reigns of the team. If you listened to Laker General Manager Mitch Kupchak, at the Mike Brown firing you had the impression that Phil jackson was the man they wanted back to coach the team. They even went as far as to meet with Jackson. Jackson left the meeting with the impression the job was his and was prepared to accept their offer to coach the team. Here’s Jackson’s take on it in his words:Jackson told his side of the story in a statement Monday.

“Saturday morning, [Lakers executive] Jim Buss called to ask if he could come and visit. I didn’t solicit or ask for the opportunity but I welcomed both him and [team executive] Mitch Kupchak into my home to discuss the possibility of my return to the Lakers as head coach,” Jackson said.

“We talked for over an hour and a half. No contractual terms were discussed and we concluded with a handshake and an understanding that I would have until Monday [today] to come back to them with my decision. I did convey to them that I did have the confidence that I could do the job. I was awakened at midnight Sunday by a phone call from Mitch Kupchak. He told me that the Lakers had signed Mike D’Antoni to a three-year agreement and that they felt he was the best coach for the team. The decision is of course theirs to make. I am gratified by the groundswell of support from the Laker fans who encouraged my return and it is the principal reason why I considered the possibility.” Two Lakers are very happy with the hire, Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant.  Steve Nash I can understand having been a two time league MVP under Dantoni in Phoenix. Kobe was alittle surprising considering he openly endorsed hiring Phil Jackson. The third player in this equation Dwight Howard could be something Dantoni didn’t have until his final season inNew York, a defensive shot blocking big man. The Lakers, used to be a stable and model franchise as for making the right decision at the right time, but this week looked like a page that they stole out of the New York Knicks of how not to make decisions. Who is making the decisions on this team? 5 Games into the season you fire the head coach, then you talk to one coach who is interested in returning only to turn around and hire an offensive minded coach who doesn’t care for defense so much so that the only D he acknowledges is the D in his last name. This is the most star studded lineup Dantoni has coached since leaving Phoenix. How will he make it work? Nash will like it, Kobe maybe love it, but did the Lakers make the right move here? So much for the talk about Brian Shaw being the headcoach. This was another opportunity to bring Shaw back and that was even endorsed by Magic Johnson. It was believed here to the Brian Shaw would have been the right move if you weren’t going to bring back Phil Jackson. So now with dantoni armed with a 3 year 12 million dollar deal cross Shaw off the Lakers coach in waiting list. And what does this mean for Phil Jackson? Is his coaching career finally coming to a close? Consider this: two openings both involving Mike Dantoni once in New York (Resigned/Fired)and now Los Angeles(Hired) and Jackson didn’t get either job. He has history with both franchises New York (Player) and Los Angeles (Championship Coach).
Will this turn out to be the move that prove the Lakers right and everyone else wrong? Let the drama begin.
